Super-slimmer Winner reveals his 'fat pig diet'

HE SHED the first 16lb with a strict diet of caviar on toast and now Michael Winner, the bon vivant, is to disclose the full story of his slimming secrets.

Winner, 70, has secured a deal to publish The Fat Pig Diet, which will explain how it is possible to lose 2½ stone in a year without giving up treacle pudding or chips.

His advice will be utterly simple: eat less. “You could almost do the whole thing in two words, but since they want 70,000 words, I’ll have to do another 69,998, which believe me, I’ll manage,” said Winner.

Smiling PigHe felt compelled to write the book after readers of his restaurant column in The Sunday Times wrote to ask how he had been able to lose so much weight without apparently curbing his gourmet’s appetite.

One trusted tactic was to leave food on his plate in restaurants, disregarding the panic it caused chefs, who feared he had found their offerings inedible.

Other tips will include weighing yourself after meals to gauge the effect of different dishes, and eating less in the evenings.

“The evening is the most dangerous time to eat,” he said “because you don’t really do much and you lie down and go to sleep. In the evening I frequently just have raspberries and goat’s milk yoghurt, with brown sugar poured all over it.

“All these experts are a waste of time, and will be utterly redundant when this book comes out.”

Over the past year, his slimming measures have seen his weight drop from a “gross” 15st 7lb to a more manageable 12st 11Çlb. He is now once again able to fit into dozens of jackets and shirts he bought during the 1980s.

Before his weight loss, the film director was mocked by a tabloid newspaper after a photograph of him on a Caribbean beach showed his droopy chest, or “moobies” — a neologism for male boobs.

“My main worry is, that though he’s lost a lot of weight and looks very sharp, he’s going to put it all back on again by the time the book comes out.”

Ed Victor, Winner’s literary agent, said: “I see that he is eating a lot less than he used to. He was a greedy guy, but he’s less so now.” Victor said he expects the book to be available next spring.

Winner said his weight loss has been helped by taking walks with a female friend who prods him in the back with an umbrella when he slows down. He also performs 25 minutes of Pilates daily.
